old guy we called Pop at nepean

A long time ago when i was too young to race at Nepean (yes that long ago)
There was a caretaker we called "Pop" ie grandfather Pop.
I used to think his tractor was old, and he was older.....
He was a really good bloke and let me ride the tractor once around the track with him.
I think i asked a zillion questions that day but he was mostly deaf any way, or pretended to be, Ha!
Anyway, was he the founder of 1959?

Was it Bob Jones ?, and in latter years Len Anderson , I think , I had me first ride there in '63 on a MAC Velo.

Sounds like old Bob Jones. Yeah Matt, he was selectively deaf and had a short fuse with dickheads. He was a good old fella. Lenny Anderson's still around and despite not being in great health still occasionally throws a leg over his Hagon JAP or JAP speedway bike.

It would've been good old Jonesy for sure. I think he's been reincarnated into the bird that looks after the place now, short fuse.
I remember one speedway club day when Sam Wilde fell off & his throttle jammed on sending the bike across the infield missing Bob by inches before ploughing into a tree.
Pre cut out strap of course.

It would have been Bobby Jones. Other blokes who put a lot of time in at the track were Bill &Tom Plunkett, Geoff Coombes, Old Bill Carr and a number of blokes from the original Penrith club, they used to race on a small track which went from where the caretakers house is now and along parallel to where the road is now. The original access to the track was a muddy old track coming straight across from Castlereagh rd. ..cheers wally.
