Hi Matt, have you found a head yet? Is it the twin inlet port model? What I have got is a few heads some that have been welded and reco'd, a couple partly done and a couple of used ones. I am not sure of the models. I had a motorcycle shop a while ago and I had a guy working for me doing head work and alloy welding. After my shop finished I ended up with box's of heads. I think I can probably help you but it would be great if you could send me some pic's of your head. My biggest problem is I am off to Africa tomorrow and won't be back till the 10th of May. If you can wait till then let me know. What area are you in? I am in Ballarat Victoria.

Regards  (Stan)

Stan S,

if he has the model as "XR250RF RFVC" it is indeed a twin inlet port model. 1986 and later are single carb.

Hi All

You'll struggle to find a good head (unless this forum has one stashed away). The 200 and the 250 84/85 model had a run of soft valve springs. The valves ended up mincing the head, seats and piston. Years ago I rebuild one for a mates son. Luckily it would not start due to compression. Valve seats came out with valves when I pulled it down.

A good welder can fix most problems but look closely for cracks in the head around the valve seat inserts and between the seats and the plug hole.

Good Luck.

Yep biggest problem is  overheating and cracks in/around the plug hole. Its a very common and known problem and in my opinion its not worth spending any money on these engines. Ive seen a few and known several guys whos heads cracked too. Its been hard to get heads for these for the past 10 or more years. I also read in ADB that honda stopped selling new heads for this model in 1988.

yeah the twin and later single carb models all cracked from the exhaust seats to the plug hole,as common as and even welding/new seats they'd crack again, one suggestion weld up the head and plug hole and drill/tap to take a 10mm spark plug giving it abit more strength and maybe big fin the head for added cooling like ballard did on the xr600's,a oil cooler off the single carb models wouldnt hurt either
