Usability of MAICO Square Barrel gear ratio’s.
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:54:51 am »
I am building some 400 Square barrel project engines. I have never even ridden a 400 squarey. I have no literature or manuals for  “S” or “T” (wide or close ratio) ratio figures.
My question is, can any body speak from experience enough to tell me if a wide ratio transmission has enough ratio overlap to keep one of these 400 “S” types on the spread of the power boil? How is their powered delivered? Would I get away with the wide ratio on dirt track, but not MX ?
Any knowledge or constructive input would be appreciated.

Post the ratios and shift point and I'll tell you a minute later. Wide ratio would be more suitable to mx with dirt track you can narrow the powerband and use a closer ratio box in a chase of top end power
Best thing to start with is a dyno run or a simulation then you actualy know what the power curve is rather than trying to guess. Then you can compare the rpm drop in each gear and see which part of the torque curve that falls on.
