Exhaust Paint Preparation.

I'll be spraying a rubbed back (lots of bare metal) exhaust Hi-Temp out of a can. Do you guys recommend a primer? If so, which one.

Primer shouldnt be required.  All the exhaust paints I've used dont require a primer e.g PJ1 VHT.  I do use rust kill however before painting the pipe.  I've found disc brake caliper paint to be excellent for exhausts.

I usually use a basic etch primer before top coating and then use VHT brake caliper paint (as for PEZBerg) and find it sticks like the proverbial!

cheers

i have used primer before and thought it offered imrovements. i used a professional Spies Hecker etch primer, white/very light grey in colour that i use on all paint work. (except for on plastics where a special plastic primer is used) Only give it a light coat, and it doesnt burn off.

ive painted pipes before with just black but found i never got really good results unless i sandblasted the pipe so it is totally bare and rust free and painted it straight away. if any small amount of rust or contaminations was left on the metal before painting the paint usually didnt last as long

For my money you can't go past a freshly blasted finish (fine aluminium oxide or garnet gives the best key, but as this not always affordable or available prepping up with a good rub over with wet and dry will do.

Fully dry the pipe, wipe all over with prepsol and then give two to three LIGHT coats of the high temp paint of your choosing (I'm not getting into the paint debate other than to say I prefer VHT Expansion Chamber Paint) giving plenty of drying time between each coat.

Once you have waited the manufactures prescribed time for total drying take the whole deal outside and hang somewhere secure. Stick your favourite paint stripping gun up the spout and heat cure on the lowest setting first and then if you are brave crank it up a notch which will eventually result in one very tough and even finish. Should the high setting cause blistering it is a simple matter to let cool and touch up although with VHT this has never happened to us.  A word of warning - don't use your missus' hairdryer for this one as you need extra heat and besides she'll kill ya!

See you at the back of the pack in '08  ;)
