New Scanner
« on: January 11, 2011, 01:44:30 am »
Went and splurged at xmas and got myself a good scanner - started going through the old slides and negs...  Not bad results!

This was scanned off a 35mm slide, then resized in Photoshop down to 800x600 (approx), and still looks ok!

Looking at these slides - I miss the old Queensland 32 perch housing block!  Most of these houses have gone now and the blocks have 6-packs of flats on them...   :'(

Love the safety gear I was wearing back in 1974 too!  Wish I still had that hat...  (Wish I still had that TY too......)   ;D

My second bike - DT100A.  This must have been mid 1975?  I think....   ::)

Again, this has scanned much better than I expected.  I suppose it does pay to buy a good scanner.  Still working out how to use it though - too many bloody options!!! ??? ???

Yeah, the scanner makes a huge difference, but it cost a mozza!  $700 was the cheapest price I found, but I wanted one that did slides and negs well and this was the one that always got the best reviews for a flatbed scanner.

I priced getting the slides and negs professionally scanned, and that was aound $1 per slide - and they wouldn't take the care that I would anyway..

Bought an Epson V700 Photo. Will scan 12 mounted slides at once (to seperate files), or 24 negs.  It has it's own seperate Hi-Res lens specifically for negs.

I then bought better software to run it - Vuescan.  I allows you to set your scanner model so the software can compensate for any scanner shortcomings, and it even allows you to tell it what type of film stock it's scanning so it can compensate for the differences between ektachrome and kodachrome etc.  (from memory kodachrome had better colour but only available in 100ASA, ektachrome was available in 100, 200 and 400ASA but the colour wasn't as good)

The software will even make multiple passes with the scanner - scanning for highlights and lowlights and then merge the two scans for a better dynamic range...

There was a cheaper version for around $450 which was supposed to be nearly as good - if your budget doesn't run to $700, then the Epson V500 Photo is a good option too.

But spend the US$29 for the Vuescan software (or US$79 for the Professional version) - It does make a difference I've been told.

The standard software is good, and I'd use it for just normal or basic scans, but Vuescan is an improvement for slides/negs.

Those scans are as sharp as ;). I bought a cheap scanner from Aldi for around $65 and documented some of my downloads here http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=14764.0 . I haven't posted any more as I was a bit disappointed with the result. It now becomes bleedingly obvious that you get what you pay for. I'd voiced my disappointment to my family about the Aldi scanner so they bought me another supposedly much better quality scanner for Christmas. Unfortunately they paid much more money for what turned out to be almost the same (Chinese)scanner as the Aldi job, only in flasher packaging. I guess it's time to start saving for one of those flash jobbys ;D.

Yeah Firko, I know what you mean - I had one of those $100 Cheaoies too - the results were pretty poor - colours all wrong and mine even squashed the photo horizontally (the egg shapped wheels were a give away!)

Very happy with this scanner so far.  The original scans were even better than this, I deliberately saved these down to 800x600 to see how they'd turn out..

Haven't tried that yet - just upgraded to Photoshop CS5, still re-learning where everything is!   ???

CS5 is much better than the old Photoshop 7 I was using.   I suppose Photoshop 7 must be 10 or 12 years old by now - I'd hope it has improved in that time!   ;D

This scan was done in a single pass (relying on pick up all the highlights and lowlights at the same time)

Whereas this one was done in two passes - one to pickup the highlights, one for the lowlights, and then the software merged them into a single file.

I think the two passes made a difference.  The second photo looks more vibrant.
