i use a long screw driver or garden hose as a stethoscope with good results but as others have said take the lid off and do a measure up and see where its at,a good way to check cyl taper is use 1 of the old rings and measure the gap at the top of the bore and than down at the transfer ports where 2 pokers tend to wear the most

i have worked out where that squeak is coming from.. the tank doesnt fit correctly as its off a  dt175,
and when the weird engine vibration kicks in it rattles around. i have since narrowed it down, is only between 3700 to 3900rpm.
