problem with 1983 DR250

Hi Guys,
    I am having a problem with my dr 250 and getting it to run correctly. I have given everything a good clean that includes the carby, it fires up no worries with the choke on but as soon as you push the choke in it dies, I have checked the idle screw and that is all fine. It runs a diaphram mukini carby on it which i am pretty sure it is the original one, the one thing i did notice is that the black coating on the main slide is wearing off in places and it is really slow to return once you open the throttle. There is a hose on the right hand side that does not seem to be connected to anything i was wondering if that could be the problem. If anyone could help me with this problem or suggest to check something that i might has missed.

Try the petrol tap and filter, you may find it is partially blocked.  ;)

like Tim says, start with the logical stuff-where's the fuel coming from and getting to- then if that doesn't work -hit it with a stick!!

I'd say the diaprapm is holed.

  I have cleaned the fuel tap and filter, and i did have a look at the diaphram and could not see any holes. Looks like I might have to go and find a big stick.

Have you cleaned the main jet, the pilot jet and needle yet? Ive had this problem before where bikes only run on the choke. Once the jets were cleaned (strip complete carby and blow out with compressed air) it was good as gold.

if you can take the carby off and and rock the slide back an forth from the air boot side to the manifold side then its stuffed. You will be getting excess air past the slide and you will find it impossible to get steady idle and it will keep 'hunting' A bit of the annodized coating comming off the slide is no real big deal though, its only when you can see/feel wear on the slide (actual base metal, not the coating)

I dont think you would have a vacume tap on that so i would say the hose you see is just an overflow/vent pipe.

You really need to inspect the diamphram well by holding it up to the light to look for pin holes.

and to add what Leith said has it had alot of water in the bowl?if so get some fuse wire and poke threw all the jets and passages,last carb i did had been drowned and even though crc/compressed air would go threw the jets under pressure after cleaning it wouldnt draw fuel out of the bowl under negitive pressure and only go on the choke[flap car type] on a xr250

You may want to check the wiring coming out of the mag cover in front of the sprocket, it goes rigid and cracks causing the ignition circuit to short out to a degree. I've had this happen before and it's led me to believe it was a fuel problem.
