when maico produced the 81 models did they ever make there own plastics
or  what companys supplied them
reason i ask is ive got some here that look like they were made buy some one from noahs arc they are solid as  no names on them  .they are new but look old if you know what i mean.if you hit some one with the rear guard it would kill them  (mmmm  thats another story i suppose) ;D

Not sure who made the original '81 Maico plastic Paul. Falk made the plastic for earlier models and I suspect that they mde it for the '81 range nut I'm not 100% sure. By the sound of your plastic it may just be the same as some no name stuff I got off eBay for my '84 500 a couple of years ago. Weird maroon wrong colour and almost bulletproof but definitely not factory.

not 100% sure but i think 81 use plastic, or at least the front fender was made by M.Robert, italy. thats what Les from vintage plastics told me, i dont know if its right though. i do know that 82 onwards used Acerbis and ive got a NOS front red one FOR SALE if any is looking for one. it doesnt have the vents at the back like original because Acerbis deleted them at some stage in that fender. you can easily cut the slots in the back to make it exactly like original though

Now I think about it, you're right Leith. M. Robert made the mudguards/sidecovers but I seem to think that Acerbis made the tank. I just checked my now sold '84 Maico and it has Acerbis all over the bike and the tank is almost the same as the '81 which leads me to  think Acerbis made both tanks.

i knew i was right about the 82 onwards models having Acerbis but was only going by what i was told that 81 had M.Robert plastics. i think its highly likely Acerbis made the tanks too. they made the tanks for the first plastic tanks on Huskys in about 84 and they also made tanks for KTM's

Are you sure that heavy fender is for an '81? it looks like an '84 item to me.

thats what i was thinking! the shape of it at the back looks like Acerbis to me. its very similar, if not the same shape at the back as the Acerbis universal Nost rear frender except the front part is specially shaped for the airbox area on the Maico. ive got a magazine test or 2 on the 82 model 490 and they say plastics made by Acerbis and the rear fender looks like the one in your photo.

Easy one Paul,

1981 tanks were made by Acerbis as per the posted pic (as were the caps and washer which are still available so I have been told)

Front and rear guard and sidecovers were made by M. ROBERT

Front race plate I will stick my neck out here and say M.ROBERT also, but they were never embossed with anything.

Airbox - no comment (but would guess at M.ROBERT ???)

Cheers
