« on: September 08, 2009, 08:00:26 am »
Hi ,
probably been discussed before but does the condensor used matter?
Les doesnt have any, I have used a early vw one. it works...
I have also heard a holden one is ok, but is their a correct condensor, or it is an on an off thing ie works or it doesnt?
Keen to hear opinions on this..
Sean

Sean, go to any auto parts  and pick up an early VW condensor Take your Maico item to make sure they give you the right one. Back in the seventies we used either Borgward, BMW Isetta or Messershmidt points and condensors. They were exactly the same and a fraction of what Balir Harley or Stacker wanted for Genuine Maico items*. You should be able to get them at any Super Cheap...not!  ;D
*I found out years later that Blair was buying his points from the same car sources and quadrupling the price!

Jeeze Firko that does'nt sound like the Blair Harley I worked for back in the days when he was importing Maico's. Had I read your post before I had dinner with him tonight I would have run that one by him. Whilst I was never privy to cost prices, to this day I have never met a fairer minded businessman than Blair and would struggle to believe that he would deliberatley rip anyone off.

Anyway back to the subject. The last set of Maico points I purchased was from Les and whilst I dont remember the price I think I would have if I thought it was overly expensive. As for condensor I run one from a Massey Fergerson and it works a treat.

Absolutely, Blair was indeed a fair and decent businessman and I wasn't at all suggesting he was a ripoff . He sold the points for the same price as the Maico list, he just got 'em a bit cheaper than from Maico. I consider it good business sense to souce cheaper parts, Blair was in business to make a quid afterall. We found the same source from Dirt Bike magazine I think it was.

David....I haven't had the need to buy Maico points for 20 years so I'd asume eBay. All of my bikes have PVL these daze anyway  ;).
Sorry I haven't got back to you regarding the Ducati Dave. I've absorbed the info and I'm in thew process of drafting an email to Brian O'Connor in the USA to chase a Venolia shorty skirt piston and a new rod kit for me. I'll keep you posted on the E.T.A. of the parts.

Has anyone thought to put a multi meter on and get the capacitance (measured in uF micro Farad's)? They are usualy a $5 electrical component.
