1983-1984 piston kits for KX500

 I have noticed that aftermarket/OEM oversize pistons are not readily available for these year models. Most outlets only go back from 1988 to 2004 ,and that the 1983-87 pistons are similar to the 88 and on pistons.Is this right? will a watercooled type piston work in an aircooled type and are the port/piston skirts the same (which I find hard to believe).Is there a supplier out there that can supply me with an oversize 1983 piston kit for a KX500?

Yep late model water cooled pistons will work, just need to run with the top ring only. What compression you loose is only a gain on a 500 2 stroke .
The big issue is what the barrel/piston currently is? Ie: has it been fitted with a liner?

  Bahnsey, I have an 83 barrel with a liner at 87.50mm or .060 thou (std is 86mm) the condition of the barrel is ok ,just missing the piston assy.From what I can tell it is not electrofusion bore (as I can see hone machine marks on the inner sleeve and I can see where the ports have been aligned,maybe LA sleeve but not certain.I have looked at the Serco catalog for wiseco and found the 575m08750 .060 87.5mm piston kit BUT it only starts the model range at 1988 and not 1983.

Hi ghostrider look on ebay.com under kx 500 piston there is a couple of guys selling oversize pistons from 1985 kx500 they will fit 83 and 84 kx500 aswell they had all sizes you will need to email them thet went up to 2mm oversize cheers kaw440
