Piston broke...
« on: September 26, 2007, 10:00:54 pm »
OK, so I spent a fortune getting the RM and TM engines rebuilt. But when it came to the RM, I put the old barrel back on with a light hone and new Suzuki 2mm over TS piston. Sadly I didn't bother to check the piston/cylinder clearance, and although she fired up all rattly I thought she'd be good for one race meet. Of course I was completely wrong, it slapped itself to death and fractured a piece off the ringland and snapped the bottom ring.

On inspection there are no marks on the piston below the point of failure, no scoring in the cylinder, no bits felll out when the barrel came off, and I retrieved two pieces of ring from inside the pipe. The point of failure was just inside the line of the left side exhaust port.

My question? What's the chances anything got into that nice new bottom end? Should I just leave it be? Flush it out? Split the cases and go through it with a fine tooth comb?

Yes, the new barrel and piston with the correct clearances will go on it now....
