Pre '75 Maico Rotax hybrid
« on: February 20, 2009, 12:48:01 pm »
I am toying with the idea of building a pre '75 250 class Maico Rotax hybrid . That is why I have been looking for a '73 Maico frame in the wanted section & have been asking about the power comparisons between the Can Am motor & the VR Montesa in the Spanish section . It seems like a logical thing to do , to put the fastest motor into the best handling frame in that class . Ironically, the Maico is supposed to have the best handling frame , but the slowest 250 class motor & the Can Am probably had the fastest motor in a reportedly poor handling frame . I see that Oldschool posted a reply in the VR vs MX1 thread that someone has already built a hybrid bike like this in Australia & Firko had written in a post in the Can Am section a while ago about one he had seen in the USA . I would be very interested in any other information on these bikes .
This is a picture of my Can Am TNT motor sitting in my '74.5 Maico GP frame . I think that it could be made to fit relatively easily , but that it would be sacrilege to use the GP frame . That is why I want to use a '73 frame ( & convert it to '74 specs ) & then convert my '74.5 Maico 250 into a 400 for the pre '75 open class.

Why does that frame look like a 75 model frame....????is it the top shock mounts?...If it is a 75 frame then the scruit boys will have furrows on their brows...

75 frame tubes wrap around the steering head. Its the GP 74.5 frame, not the 1st LTR 74 frame

Looks good in there Mark doesn't it.

Sounds like a great Hybrid!

Watch out for the carb.  When mounted it will come awfully close, if not hit the frame rail on the left side.  If it does fit you may have to box off the airbox section with alum sheet and just cut a hole to fit a pod filter through. Good luck!

This will make interesting reading if you go ahead with it. If you do, make sure you post it all up here as it unfolds.
On an other topic, I think you said there was a meeting on this sunday at Mackay. Are you able to take a few photos and give us a bit of a run down of the meeting, alah DJ ?

I will take my camera & try to put in a bit of a write up . It will be more of a modern meeting though , with reports of over 300 nominations for this 2 day meeting . They let us run a classic class which is basically pre  '78 , but I think that numbers will be down this year for these older bikes . It is going to be stinking hot & humid , but I don't like to miss a meeting at Gum Valley as it is an excellent track (& hosted a round of the Nokia MX nationals 2 years ago) .

For sure Gum Valley is an excellent track, long, wide & very fast( so says Daniel Reardon, who gets along pretty well himself ).  I've ridden it a couple of times, and it really suits the open class bikes.  Great organisation & facilities, they encourage the vintage guys, and the trackside crowds are largest when the old bikes are racing.  I'm sorry this year I won't be able to go, and crank up the VB.
Ideal track for some of that Rotax power in your Special!

Paul, I do have a '79 MC Magnum frame . But I recently had it blasted & resprayed with 2 pack, so it now owes me a few dollars . I had it lined up for a project , as I have a 440 Magnum motor in bits & probably enough parts to  build up a complete bike . I'll have a think about it & email you later with some pictures of the frame .
