good to see south australian David Schwarz do well. if it wasnt for a 4hr penalty for missing a checkpoint he would of been higher up. also good to see he was mentioned a few times on the SBS telecast. He has done well in reliabilty trials and enduros such as the 24hour over the past 10 or 15 years and is a good rider and i think each year he rides the Dakar hes getting better. We should see him higher up the placings next year

but hey did you see all those trucks loosing momentum and getting stuck half way up the dunes and then sliding down sideways! that looked pretty freaky and i thought they were going to tip over and roll back down.

Sand is no problem at all to the average truck.  those who have ventured into the 4x4 realm and those with plenty of chains and sprockets will know that its torque and rolling motion is what  gets you through sand.

My Dads job was core sampling beaches and replanting native vegetation after extraction of mineral sands (driving along beaches everyday what a bastard of a job)and his work vehicle was a 6 wheel drive chev blitz with a 253 holden running on used jumbo jet tyres.
 Not even a slight look at going down even in dry powder. I remember one instance a dune buggie had gone too far into the surf zone and was sucked down into the liquid sand and was all but buried for most of the day.
 Dad pulled it out with the blitz and didnt get out of two wheel drive to do it. thats called flotation as sand is liquid ;)

100% success rate for Kawasaki & Suzuki in this year's Dakar!  ;)

Too bad the bloke on the 125cc Honda didn't finish...

I really enjoyed watching this year's event (as always), and I think that the location was spectacular.

I didn't know what to expect out of this year's Dakar, but you're right Tex, it was spectacular.
Pity about the guy on the 125 not finishing. i love seeing the guys that do it a little 'differently'.  ;D
Well done to Bruce Garland and Harry Suzuki for their 11th outright too!

2010---Six of the top ten finishers were KTM riders.

Marc Coma, Despres' eternal rival in the KTM camp, finally finished in 15th place after penalties put him out of contention. But he still had four stage wins to his credit and, penalties aside, his actual riding time was remarkable close to that of Despres, proof enough that the two KTM riders are in a class of their own in international rally competition. The result was all the more remarkable because both Despres and Coma had to ride with air restrictors on their KTM 690 rally machines, to reduce the performance down to the level of a 450 cc bike, since the middle of 2010, the new standard for racing the Dakar.

The 2010 was yet another triumph for KTM, the Austria manufacturer whose sports machines play such a dominant role in international offroad competition. KTM first won the Dakar Rally in 2001 and has been undefeated ever since. Six of those victories have come with either Despres or Coma at the handlebars and each has now won three Dakar titles.
