Dat file.
« on: November 29, 2008, 10:58:56 pm »
I've got a couple of photos of a Cheney Honda I want to post on another thread but the photos are in a Data file format, whatever that is. Can any of you braniacs tell me how to convert a Dat file photo over to a JPEG?

I realise that I probably should know such stuff but I'm a philistine when it comes to the intracies of the computer world. I don't even know how to use half of the functions on my mobile phone.  ???

k umm the basic version of this is that a .DAT file is a Data file not an actual image file. There are many programs that can create a DAT file but all will result in something  different but the same . think  like jikov mikuni bing. all do the same thing but  wont interchange
converting the data to an image requires the specific software that created the image to decode the data .
 soooo
easy way is to open the file on the pc with the program that created it and then save as  .jpeg .bmp or .tiff .png .gif or whatever or give everyone a kevlar margerita and a copy of the software to install ;D

I sort of understand Pokey but not really! I understanded the Margarita bit but that's about it. Here's what happened....The bloke sent me an email with two photos attached. I saved them to 'My Pictures" and then later to the photo file on my external hard drive. For some reason the format comes up as a Dat file rather than the usual jpeg. I can't use the specific software that created the image to convert it as the originator of the file is in America and I've long deleted the email and therefore his contact details. I should have asked him to resend as a jpeg but didn't think of it at the time. I have a jpeg compressor program that seems to be able to do it but I haven't a clue on how to use it. Like I said earlier...I'm as dumb as dogshit when it comes to this stuff. It might be better if I wait 'til Jonesys IT guy comes back to work off holidays and let him sort it.

yeah mate I understand what its like  with file types and computer jargon  and crap and how daunting and how mind boggling it can be as i use to teach seniors and disabled groups 101 computers.

Dat files are not usually graphic files . a dat file can accompany a graphic file as it contains instructions of how to display the file and where and when it was created and how and whom by and what with.

If you can open a file and display it on your pc  then the file is complete but Im guessing the file is only half there and could be an idea to track down your mates email address and have them re sent, Perhaps as jpegs .

If you can open them they are complete and I can convert so feel free to Pm me and shoot the thru to my email .

M,

If that fails, I have the Cycle Illustrated w the article on the original Cheney 250 Honda. I could scan it at a friend's place & email/post them.

I have it too John, thanks mate. I'd just like to be able to show the photos the American bloke sent me to Derek to prove that there were more than the one Cheney Honda cantilever made. I've since found that there is another unassembled Cheney Honda frame kit in OZ in addition to Gilesys and know of at least two in the US.

Sometimes when you save an image directly from an email it is saved without a file extension and Windows then just calls it a 'data' file. It can't be opened by many image programs which depend on the file extension to recognise the format. Go to the file in Windows explorer and rename it to 'filename.jpg' where filename is whatever it is called (or what you want to call it), then try opening it with your image software (or just drag and drop it into your browser to see if it displays).

You're welcome :)

And that Cheney thread is a great read, and love the bikes too. Could be tempted to kill for an original KSI too!
