Love the chrome,  i have only got as far a a set of solid bars ATM, but Im kinda hanging for the 898 now, has all the good points and on the cusp of cut off so might be more my speed and suit my shitful mech skill, im not big on shimming and all that valve stuff

Well i know shit. but i have learnt a few things, they are all similar frames but the donks change depending on era, and certain motrs dominated for a period, bit it weslake, godden, jawa and so on, the main differances seems to be in the valves 2 to 4, upright ( moderns are laydown) and the oil pumps out to waste, or the 898 which recicle back to engine. other than that there isnt to much to say. there all kinda just a set of cases with a crank a piston and a head, the rest seems to be period based some went better than other at the period.

i found a really good web site that explained all this ill try find the link, it all made perfect sence after you read it.

With respect Freaky, if your mechanical abilities are as you describe you're not ready for a speedway bike. These things, as simple as they look, are extremely labour intensive. Forget to keep the maintenance up and you'll pretty quickly own an expensive pile of Czech scrap metal.

That is very sound advice Freaky.  We used to say "Every 6 minutes of running always requires 60 minutes of maintenance" Think about these purpose built machines . Engines operate at Full ON 40hp plus or Nothing, they run on methanol with all that fuels quirks, lubrication of engine is at best very rudimentary , direct drive with a dry exposed clutch, spindly frame wheels with FA suspension,  power to weight factor is huge!! Buy one race it ! it is a total blast !!! but be prepared to get of your butt and learn how to maintain it, Tim754

the 2 valve is the easy one to sevice and race.4v are a little more tricky.4v weslake is the best to learn on.the 898 is the last of the jawa uprights and the most powerfull.it has all the rec/oil pump and pvl ignition as std.my 1976 tt500 hagon will run just as fast as that 898.yes it is built to jawa specs 11:1 comp big cam runs on methonal.my brother the previous owner/builder and a grade dirt tracker beat goddens and 4v 898 jawas all the time on it.wally cox on his beats laydown jawa longtrackers off the start at nepean all the time

Hep i know, i got a mate thats an aircraft mech and racers a 2 valve Jawa, hence why i would like to try one while he can hold my hand, he does all the draining and complaining but has put his hand up to look after the bike if i get one, cause he is right into the hands on side.    

Also why im trying to get a 898, a few less things to go spit and a lot easier to look after.    im still doing my homework and research which is why i havent just gone out and bought one, im serious enough to know i need the right bike to suit my ability and mech skills.  If i was just after bike i would have got bought the goddern and the weslake i have already been offered, but based on my info so far, i would be crazy to play in that space.     The speedway thing is on my Bucket list, when i see the right bike i know it :

time consuming compared to MX bikes. after each meeting i used to do the following to my Mark IV Weslake from memory and much more i can' t remember.

clean and adjust points/dwell
charge magic box
drain carby of methanol before it turns to jelly
clean pod filter
clean clutch out and adjust
check valve clearances
change gearing ready for next meeting
boil chains (primary and secondary in duckhams)

very finicky things if not treated with respect that will let you down and hurt the back pocket big time.

As the above blokes say , you have to try it, like you said Freaky its definetly Bucket list stuff! Enjoy.

Nah killed it , hung in as long as i could but had to pull out at $2900.  I did the maths and that was my cut off to have it at my door at $3500 per bike, still a good deal but meh still tight.    Bloddy exchange rate killed it in the end we have dropped down to nearly half again at 60. its just killing these deals and there are so many good bikes coming out of hiding at the moment its a buyers dream s they are finally surfacing again.

Would have been a steal if the xchange was at 85, far out a bit devistated really,

bloody foreign banks and there stupid investment problems, then again with out the crisis probly some of this kit wouldnt be coming out and at the prices they are.

I think i would have sunk my teeth into it if it was just the 898, but the wessy meant i would have to deal with 2 bikes so kinda doubled the issues.  ahhh well next time.

yer how is that 16 watches on a H100 , not a bidder in sight but im surprised there are that many folks who even know what a superlight is, never mind on there watch list 

Are you waiting for my parts to come on line lozza ?   i got a complete motor in at Ians been sitting on his floor for the last 6 years waiting on him to fit some mains to it, we dont have a class here on the Tar any more so probally not even worth asking him to fit them now and the other bits i sent down there.  Hence why im selling it anyway 

i think the biggest group of riders at the moment in that class is NT, they seem to be the only ones still getting into it, but i noticed they have a class split and some not so great rules for each.  but hey be good to see it continue racing it was a great bike, failing that i found some rego plates for it so i can always put it back on the road for a laugh.  BE great at the lights.  brrrp... brppppp/ brrrp

Just read his description its not that great.   actually he does more to put it down than anything, a bike ridden on a display ride by a famous guy dont mean a squat, if that same guy labels it a pile of "shit that never ran right", addminttedly its got potential, but if thats the best he can do after removing all the fork ups from the MAgazine before he got it with all the road stuff, he needs to have a better go.   ITs still along way off being right, but i would be love'n to have that donk if nothing else, looks to be at least a decent works type motor.
