Making a cylinder Head
« on: January 24, 2009, 10:02:38 am »
I am contemplating getting a cylinder head made/ copied (air cooled). Any one gone to such lengths? Any suggestions as to who to contact? Preferably in Queensland.
I am assuming that a CNC machine can do such a task??

To copy a Mugen air cooled head. Not to get a bike going.

I was thinking about taking some of my DG heads and getting the Chinese to churn out a few dozen.

Can you post a pic of the Mugen v's standard head? Air cooled is not easy.Big question is cast or machined, cast would be a better option but adds some issues. Machined from solid has a different set of hurdles. You will quickly become bored with this.

Casting.
A wooden or MDF copy of the head would have to be made then the casting made from that.If you wanted a 1 off a foam or wax head could be made, then the item made from those but the mould is destroyed when the molten ali is poured. Then there is the final machining of the casting. Cost for  1 off astronomical and depending on the casting tooling cheaper the more you churn out.

Machined
First is material, how ever much the big bit of billet costs 75% of the material will end up as swarf. Next is it can only be made as well as it's been drawn up. Good news is when machining is finished the job is finished.Manual machining will cost a large fortune and CNC cost a small fortune.Again the more made the cheaper the unit cost.
If you go through with it will appreciate the quality of Honda OEM castings. ;D
Why would you make a DG head when spinning a standard head on the lathe can yield better results ???

some where in Australia, i think in QLD there is a place that casts heads/barrels. i know someone who was making a custom made V-twin Matchless and he had 2 barrels specially made and i was expecting it was going to be thousands but i was very surprised at the how cheap the cost was when he told me. i can not remember extact price or where the place was but i think they may have advertised in Just bikes?

A bloke down here in melbourne made an exact replica 1912 (or thereabout)) Indian 1000cc V twin board track racer (similar to pic below). this included all his own castings. he is a well respected racer/engineer in his late 60's early 70's now i would guess. i spoke to him 3 years back and his plan was to run it at the speed trials on Lake Gardiner SA.

these things were so cool and and awesome bikes back then (run alcohol fuel, no brakes, 8 valve v twins running on wooden velodrome type tracks 100+ MPH)

The casting is cheap, tooling is expensive unless you can make the tooling yourself. That's same for most manufacturing processes.
