Luke will tell you all you want to know about these, so wait till he chimes in, but pretty much most parts are interchangeable. only minor detail changes between the two.

that speedo mount on ebay is unlike any PE speedo mount ive seen before.

Yeah, putting the two bikes side by side I cant see much physical difference,I'll wait to hear from Luke, but at this point I'd say they were the same.
Because of the parts I have, I'll put the '78 motor in the '79 frame ,use '79 airbox(its complete)rear wheel,(backing plate suits swingarm)and then most of the parts off the '78.................it's all fun 'til someone gets hurt !!!

Mmmm.... I might be able to help here  ;D

snail-cam adjusters and the brake hub are the two enormously radical visible changes that stand out. Another readily visible giveaway is the grease nipple on the swingarm. (torque settings changed for that bolt, too!) Technically, the outrageous increase from 32mm to 34mm carb and the altering of the advance from 18 (black CDI) to 20.5 degrees (gold CDI)...  one of the breakthrough changes was removing the little clip tabs on the airbox lid! Of course the 9 vs 10 heat-range change can be spotted by the discerning Suzuki owner.

The dead giveaway on an Australian PE175N sold after 1st April was the tabs for the battery and blinkers that became mandatory in NSW. Hence also the battery and extra lighting coil.

Try to use the N pipe and muffler as they had smaller restrictors. (if they are still there at all) Engine was identical apart from a fractionally thinner head-gasket.  I do not recall finding any changes in porting or piston for the C vs N.
A curious difference is the tank - seemingly identical, the earlier batches held 12 litres and later N's only 11.5 due to an increase in the thickness of the plastic.

The trivia stuff is irrelevant. For your question - same bike, 99.5% interchangeable.

Luke

because they are a hardcore enduro bike. for ISDT, 2 day qualifiers etc, they didnt need such a big tank as the distance between sections were not as long, but this however let down the weekend trail rider and desert racer where 12-14 liters would be much better.

in 1980 they reduced the capacity even smaller to 10.6 Liters, its interesting to note that my self and Fabrice in france have some original 80/81 tanks ( some of mine had original stickers) that hold more than the specified 10.6 liters. i have a original 1980 tank that holds a little over 12 liters and one that holds about 11.7

i think they used some left over older larger capacity tanks on the 80/81 bikes!!

look under tank and there is a MFG date stamped

I assumed instances of splitting/cracking under duress/crashes!

SOME of the first N's still measured 12 litres. Take your tank and turn it upside-down. Look for a date circle and in addition you might see a "12L". That's the larger tank. Latter didn't have the mark - and will measure 11.5 litres.
