OK here's a question which will either test the memory or prove that I am losing my marbles.  Was there an earlier aircolled YZ 500 works bike before this - when did the 500 come out?  I seem to have this thought in my head that around the early 80's Yamaha bought out their first works 500 when still selling 490's - if I remember correctly it looked so much like Gallys YZ featured on the front of VMX mag?

The one you maybe thinking of is the OW that gally campaigned in about '81 I think, it had a cantilever rear end, with a aircooled/powervalved donk....and drum brakes.
I'm not sure why Yamaha factory bikes went from being designated OW's to YZM's.

Yes there was an earlier one rossco. i remember a Yamaha Promo poster from about 1982/83 of a works YZM500 aircooled & powervalved. it was stuck on the wall of my local dealer back then. it had to be that era as i was buying parts for my YZ250J then.

I have got one of the Yamaha promo posters of the 1st air cooled YZM500's , its quite faded , took it into the local copy centre to get them to scan it and then manipulate it digitally to bring back the colour but it sat there for months and they hadn't done it . have retrieved it and will try to find somewhere that will do it . will try to post the pic up on this forum (if I can learn how)

yeah you did andrew, but i can't remember where i put it on the hard drive, i will find it though!
