IT250L case damage
« on: October 30, 2008, 10:04:27 am »
Where the clutch push lever inserts into the case near the front sprocket, the top rounded part of the case has been previously damaged by the chain and a small chunk of the case is missing. It was sealed up by the previous owner with what looked like sykaflex but came out after the second ride. There are no oil leaks arising from it but dirt and crap will soon find a way to get in.
Anyone know a welder here in Brisbane who could seal it or is there a type of metal glue that may seal it?
Also are there aftermarket chainguards to fit to stop this happening in the future.
My thanks.

Devcon metal putty is just the thing for this job, it can be shaped filed and painted to give you a top notch permanent repair, of course the surface prep must be good to achieve optimum results but I can say I have used this product to repair many damaged cases and corroded water cooling components. You can get Devcon from CBC Bearings and various other outlets like large fastener dealers and places like Gasweld & CIG Tradestores. As for the chain gaurd, I guess you may need to get creative with some sheet alloy or perhaps steel angle iron, good luck with the repair ;)

in Brisbane, i've used Specialist Welding at Hiley st slacks creek and been very happy with his work and prices etc, 07~32089988
you may need to dismantle the engine down to the bare case for him to weld it being the catch.
then i'd check the bearings seals while it's in that state.
or Devcon, choice is yours.

TYMTIT, where are you based?

I am a metal fabricator that does aluminium welding on the northside of brisbane, depending on the case base material (which with Yamaha is usually good) could tig weld up, the devcon is also a great idea but welding will stop further cracking, Vandy is spot on with the issue of ease to get at and the welding may be the cheap thing depanding on how easy to get at and alike (would need to see or see a picture) would set you back about 40 bucks tops for welding but a bit less for forum members

Send me a PM if you need a hand preferrably with a picture or you could drop in and see me (if on the Northside if on the southside try Vandy's man).

I would have thought that IT’s came out std with a case saver. The PE’s did.. ive seen aftermarket Protec  case savers on ebay for earlier IT’s but you can just make them your self out of some alloy or steel plate
Wanted - 1978 TS185 frame or frame&motor. Frame # TS1852-24007 up to TS1852-39022

Thanks gents for the advice. I'll give STW996 a try as I am on the northside of Brissy.
I thought that there may have been an aftermarket case saver available so now I'll probably end up making my own.
