2019 Dakar Rally
« on: January 08, 2019, 11:07:24 pm »
Anyone else following the Dakar Rally this year?

Aussie legend Toby Price secured a credible 6th place on Day 1 (after being in 3rd place for a while). All of the other three Australian riders completed the first day too.

Some of you may be familiar with the name Steve Riley from the Australian Safari. He's driving a Holden ute in the cars division, and also successfully completed Day 1.

There's a very long way to go for everyone.

Toby is riding inside his limits and being very smart. Watch him in the last few days go for broke. Only a 10 day race this year - mostly sand riding and 100% Peru with no other countries involved.

Rod Faggoter is out of the race unfortunately.

SBS On Demand coverage is good. Red Bull TV cover very high level and brief.

Toby Price - Legend!

Even got a detailed report on the ABC radio news this morning.
(Less than the embarrassing “Oxygen Thieves” That are our top ranked Male Tennis players)

Likely a story on the ABC TV news tonight. (If Trump doesn’t start WW3)

yep - outstanding news. An absolute star is our Toby
Agree with you Skypig on tennis - me thinks Leyton  has done a fine job of developing a bunch of respectful young guys rather than the past crop of arrogant over paid oxygen thieves as you well note.

Trump is much more likely to prevent WW3 than start it from what I have seen.
If you love it, lube it.

Toby Price's victory is a terrific sporting achievement by any measure, even if you have no interest in motor sport at all.

It was also great to see two other Australians finish in the bikes: Ben Young in 55th place, and James Ferguson in 67th. James also managed to come in 12th in the unassisted Originals by Motul (a.k.a. malle moto) division. These guys were both doing the event for the first time.

There were so many other impressive efforts too, and just finishing the rally is an individual victory for the unknown privateers who make up the majority of the entrants.

About 2 column inches in the Herald Sun here. When the papers do a 2 page colour spread on him that is big time. Until then, unfortunately, he is regarded as a maniac in a distant fringe sport by the MSM.
If you love it, lube it.
