The number of clips doesn't effect the clutch tension. The outer one takes all the load. Make sure you have the springs double stacked, that is 2 one way then 2 the other. Sometimes there is room for an extra spring or an extra steel plate. Also check that the clutch cover isn't putting the cam to close to the clutch give no effective free play. With the cable of you should be able to move the arm quite freely until the free play takes up.

Sleepy is correct.
But also check for Warped Clutch Plates.
Especially the first outer and the last inner.
DO NOT use Synthetic Oil in the Gear Box/Clutch. It will slip.
Use a good 20/50 Mineral oil .

Thank,s guys,
iv'e only used oil as recommended by Les and have installed numerous clutch plates and springs.
No free play on the cam seems to be the issue.

Try a thicker gasket under the cover or 2 gaskets.

Is the Clutch cover Original or has it been replaced.?.
This is very important as around this time 79/80. Maico made many changes to the Gearbox and Clutch.
Firstly the Clutch covers are Machined norrower 2/3mm than the early Magnums.
The Kick shaft is different . Apart from many parts in the clutch.
Have you a copy the Maico 79/80 Service Bulletens?. This the only way to be sure .
They are not in the Service or Owners Manual.

Cheers Nebo,
Not sure about original clutch cover.
The service bulletin I have is 250-400-450 Magnum.
Maybe that's where I'm going wrong ?

The changes to the clutch started March 79.
But no One Maico is built the same as the next.
There are Mainy changes up to 1982. Go to the Opperman Motors Maico Web site.
You can Down load all the Service Bullitons free of charge.
This has all the Changes and Part numbers . Plus Measurements and Photos.
