New Forge
« on: September 07, 2017, 07:54:53 pm »
Just finished building myself a forge and also an anvil.  The forge is made with a metal outer box and insulated with Hebel blocks around 100mm thick and with a floor made from fire bricks.  It has a insulated door on the back and sliding doors on the front to keep the heat in. The forge is mounted on a trolley so it can be moved out of the way when not being used. The unit is heated using a home made gas burner and is capable of temperatures hot enough the forge weld.  The gas cylinder is also mounted in the trolley under the forge.  I can't afford to buy a real anvil so I made one out of a billet of steel about 160mm square and 360mm long.  I didn't fancy drilling a hole through it and then having to file it square for a Hardy hole, so I drilled the hole on my mill and then cut the female end off a 3/4 inch socket extension bar which was a press fit for the hole, now that it's filled it makes a nice Hardy hole to mount my anvil accessory tools.  The anvil is mounted on a robust frame which brings it up to a good working height. Welded on a couple of brackets for tools then made myself a forging hammer, now I'm ready for some black smithing.  I have attached a couple of photos of the forge and also one of the anvil.

Well that didn't work, friggin photobucket.  This is probably another reason why the build threads have slowed, nowhere near as interesting without photos and I for one refuse to be forced by photobucket to pay money for what has always been free.  You would think that they would be getting enough money in from all of the ads on the bloody site.

Try IMGUR for photo hosting.  Works the same (if not a bit easier) than PB.

Bugger , this could have been a worthwhile thread . How much to pay for the right to use the photo bucket ?

The Photobucket app says $399.99 per year to host photos for third party websites. Very expensive.

I have opened a 30 day free account with ( Imageshack ) to see how it works. First year costs less than $15. I put the photos on a new tread ( New Forge Photos ) so that anyone interested will see them, I thought that some, not knowing they were there might not reopen the original thread.
The posted photos are copied and pasted onto here just like photobucket but the end result is not quite as good.
One of the main reasons I decided to build the forge was to do small heating jobs that I used to do with my oxy/acet, but I am very low on gas and no way of getting anymore supplies, so I will now only use it for welding.   LPG is a readily available and a lot cheaper to buy and use.
     Hope you enjoy.  Zane

Not sure where to go with the photos but went on to photobucket and downloaded all 350 to my computer - is easy and although one at a time no problem - took 25 mins - now the Q is where to put them so as to get the 3rd party link going again.

Anyone good at writing batch files?   To go on this OZVMX site and replace all photobucket links with new links

My photos all have the same IMG number as when I took them but there is some "code" attached

IMG_2578_zps832db119

the   _zps832db119   has been attached by photobucket

Just purchased myself an old English made anvil, so I have just put my old anvil and stand up for sale on Gumtree.
Hopefully it will sell quickly.
