Finally started taking bits off for the clean up - well, seat, side plates and rear guard. 

Would you believe it - no matching bolt pairs have been found.  All 6 bolts removed so far are different, make that 8 if you include the front caliper.  I see a full bolt kit coming on...  Oh, and the air filter looked like it's hasn't been cleaned, oiled or replaced in decades.  Will be real interesting to see inside the motor!!!!

Rear guard probably wasn't in too bad condition until the previous owner flipped it.  Some light scratches, but generally clean & shiny.  Shame about the big bend and crease.  I started scraping back the part that fits under the seat, then wet & dry to practice bringing back the finish.  I definitely need to spend more time and elbow grease to get this technique up to my standards, so am happy I'm practicing on a piece that isn't going back on the bike!

Your lucky you had an airfilter in there.  I have groaned when i have checked out a few bikes i have purchased and there is no sign of an airfilter what so ever.  Folks are unbelievable.

Well, I haven't updated this thread since July 2015 -  oops

In the meantime I have built a 2006 ZX10 race bike from a stat write off,  so not exactly lazy!

I started the CR strip down last week and came across some good and bad...

The water pump was completely blocked and 5 of the 6 impeller fins were broken. The case is also starting to corrode with lumps of magnesium coming away.

The head is in amazing condition and the bore looks ok; plate-able if not useable as is

The bike is now a bare frame and a pile of parts. I expect to spend the next few months cleaning, polishing and making a long list of what needs replacing. Early next year I'll start to acquire parts and hope to rebuild over winter.

I am surprised you have any water pump housing left at all. just re read the thread, i cant believe the airfilter didn't disintegrate when riding and suck into your engine. I recently freshened up an ol dr that had been sitting for 8 years or more and the airfilter fell apart in my hands as I went to wash it...

With the waterpump, you can buy a genuine 1991 cr250 one that is aluminium and will bolt straight to your motor. Best way to get over the readed magnesium rot problem

Thanks - the 89 >> cases are Aluminium, about $300 new.  Impeller is $45 then find a cover & gasket.  I'm still deciding wether to clean the radiators out or get new, but have only found Chinese knock offs so far.

chinese ones seem ok, the mounts break tho so you need to beef them up a bit. take yours to a radiator joint that does bike stuff. prob strip clean and test for a reasonable price

I dont feel you need to practice restoring plastic. I had restored the tank on my 83A Kx125. At one point i had a green scuffed up lump of crap in front of me. I wondered what i had done and tbought i was going to have to find another. But I kept at it just stepping down on sand paper grits until the final stage of polishing it out with a wheel. The final result was a tank that looked new. Just keep the faith
