I have only poked my toe into VMX racing, I am basically to fat and unfit to race at any level in MX, but I am quite happy with the types of "vintage" riding I currently do.
I try to ride a couple of trials each year in the SA Historic White class. I have a Yamaha TY250B, a Honda TL250 and a TL125 so I am spoilt for choice on a solo, plus there's my Mod 199 Bultaco Sherpa 350 sidecar for the times that I can find someone dumb enough to swing for me.
Last year I made my comeback at Reliability Trials here in SA on a 1987 XT250T Yamaha. Even though these are Open events, there is a Pre-1990 class so those of us on old bikes don't compete directly with the Expert or even the Clubman riders. I am happy to bimble around at my pace and finish at the back of the field overall. I treat the events as a well organised trail ride with good medical support, if someone wants to give me a trophy at the end of the day, that's just a bonus. This year I have built up a 1988 TT250 to ride and might even have a go at the 24Hr.
I have ridden Vinduro at Harrow on my Husky 390 Auto, and would love to get across to VIC for a few more Vinduro events, unfortunately other things in my life have gotten in the way over the last couple of years. Maybe this year.
Back in 2008 I built up one of my 1978 SR500 Yamahas to ride at the 2009 DLRA Speedweek up at Lake Gairdner. Never got to ride it as the event was rained out as was the following year. The bike has sat in my shed waiting for me to have another try, unfortunately the Tenere Tragic rides and Speedweek always seem to clash and the Tenere ride has won for the passed 7 years. I need to get up there and give the poor SR a run. I would love to build up a bike that is eligible for the Vintage class, but that requires a whole lot of time, work and money, none of which I have a lot of at the current time.
