Methanol.
« on: August 20, 2016, 08:40:52 pm »
I was told that you can use methanol in modern dirt track, but not motocross.
I thought you weren't allowed to use it in DT or MX after about 1978.
Will someone set me straight on this?
Thanks.

Dirt Track MOMS Rule 17.14.5.2  :  In addition, for Senior and Classic competition, commercially manufactured pure Methanol with no additives other than lubrication oil may be used.

Also see 13.11.5.1. for classic mx and dirt track  :

Fuel for all machines must :
(a) Be pure methanol, or,
(b) Be unleaded fuel that is no more than 100 RON etc etc...

methanol is finicky to set-up unless you have experience.

unless you know about it be prepared to lunch a few engines till you get it right, this advice was given to me by a renowned tuner in Geelong many years ago when i approached him to do it to my CR250 for Dirt track. i backed away.

The main thing is, do NOT go lean. Metho will cope with being way too rich and you can work your way down, but never go lean !  8)

Also, if you are getting into dirt track or vintage dirt track, or indeed any race discipline, always a good idea before you cut, weld, assemble or outlay on anything to have a quiet read through the GCRs/MoMS/Rulebook. Far too many folk have ripped into it on an impulse only to depart cursing when things don't suit their ideal vision. Do your homework and it will be a much smoother intro  :)

Only ever had one bike run on meth (TM250), i was so surprised how cool it ran and also the nice power curve...
Bit painful washing it through with unleaded after use.
Good stuff
I have a soft spot japanese mxers with aluminium tanks. Two stroke classic Dirt Track...
