Interchanging a D/E model YZ250 tank with an F model tank.
« on: March 16, 2016, 02:03:04 pm »
I am on the lookout for a 1979 YZ F model tank (yellow or white, I am not fussy). The bike is an import with a Desert tank fitted.

I am unsure if a tank from a D/E model will fit an F model? Anyone experience or knowledge on this?

Part number is 1W4 - 2411000 for D/E and 2X4-2411000 for the F model. I am thinking they should be interchangeable.

They will not bolt straight on but with a couple of flat steel brackets they can be made to fit.

The "F" was a unique model for both the 125 & the 250\400 models for tanks & sidecovers. & especially the 400 engine\bore.

Yamaha usually did a 2-3 year run of compatible plastics but  not the F. The guards however will fit from just about any model of the era.

Have some spares. Which colour do you prefer?

Thanks for that, looks like I will have to make it fit.

The bike I purchased is an import, it is a bit weathered but all there. I was intending to make it a bit like Hannah's OW40. I have found a set of translucent side covers in the US.
It came with a big desert tank so I need to get ride of it.
I do have a spare white tank from a D/E but I was keeping it for me 400F as it has a painted tank.

Thanks for the great advice. Where are you located. If you have a set of yellow guards, I would take them off your hands.

Thanks,
Mick

If you could send a pic of the guard please.
Thanks for the advice as well. Appreciated.

I may be wrong, but i don't think concourse parts are still producing the guards. They seem to have some front plates still for sale on ebay but thats about it.

They are not doing guards anymore but still have stock of sidecovers. Closest thing you will get to NOS.

You can still buy their guards through Speed & Sport (Yamatopdog)

I know someone with a 250F yellow tank (USA model) who wants to swap it for a white one if anyone has one & is keen on a yellow bike.
