Yamaha air fork seals
« on: February 25, 2016, 10:00:38 pm »
What is a good replacement for the NLA 76 air fork seals 509-23145-L0-00
My info says this has not been superceded and although the same size as other 36mm yamaha forks (TT/XT/IT) they are a different part number so there must of been something 'special' about these seals back in 76? I have some Cycle world tests on the 76/77 RM and they said to use yamaha 'teflon' seals instead of the Suzuki ones as they were better so i assume they would have been meaning the 76 YZ seals.

In theory the 'Leakproof' seals sound like a good option, i have never had problems using them in non air applications, they say they are rated up to 200psi and seal better with air.

I thought that the oil height is higher than the seals so it will be oil that leaks out if the seal leaks and not air.

New originals from Kawasaki in Mrs KDXs 36mm forks leaked from day one, replaced them recently with a set from pyramid parts and haven’t had any problems since. There was quite a difference in the internal seal lip size between the two when I put the verniers on them. The forks have good bushes too so that was not the problem.

I recall the Pyramid ones were something like a half mm or so tighter. Measured all the others I had here (athena and something else) and they varied a little bit but were all somewhat tighter than the originals.

the Pyramid oil seals were ok with me but the dust seals that came in the kit were from a different planet altogether.
One of the other kits I have is an MSR kit, the oil seal has a double lip that goes to the oil side and a single lip on top. It also comes with deacent looking dust seals but I cant comment on how good or bad it is becouse I havent used them yet. They do look like excellent quality compared to all the other 36mm seals I have.
