RIP Pinny
« on: January 02, 2016, 04:33:57 pm »
Sad news yesterday from the speedway/dirt track/long track sidecars guys was of the passing of Paul Pinfold.
I could not scratch the surface of Pinny's achievements on 3 wheels but it's enough to say that they were vast indeed.
Only a couple of weeks ago Paul was in Europe where he finished 2nd in a major long track event.
He had more scars and injuries than most of us have hot dinners and he received a bump on his leg while there and collected a blood clot on returning to Aust.
Paul was 65 and passed from a heart attack last Tuesday.....RIP great racer.

Nice tribute EML, he was pretty much known worldwide in some faction of sidecar racing or another, I remember him racing British grasstrack years ago when the bike mags were still black and white newsprint. He was bloody quick and almost fanatically determined on the track in any discipline, and could have been anything if he'd had something even remotely resembling a budget.
He lived in Perth for some time and criss-crossed the country in his huge old race bus adorned with the massive grafted-on radiator. He was a clever bugger and had an amazing analytical mind and quick solutions to all chassis problems. In contact with a mutual friend last night he revealed that Paul was expecting the clot situation to clear up and to be released any day, that's a rough way to go out.
Anyway he has had a big impact on three-wheel racing around the world through sheer determination and guts, good on him. All who raced him won't forget him.
RIP Pinny.
Nostalgia's not what it used to be....

I forgot to mention that Paul had recently made a crossing of Aus in, of all things, a sidecar built from a Camry 1/2 cut.
I didn't see it in the flesh but the boys that did said it was amazing, 2 wheel drive, obviously, and in the rush to get on the journey the fairing was made of coreflute and tarps.
I'm told he was pulled over in out-back S.A. and asked what he thought he was doing only to flash the copper his Qld rego papers and be told to 'get on his way'. The rules and regs for sidecars in Qld are quite vague evidently.
