PE400 VIN and Eng number identifier
« on: December 23, 2015, 08:11:29 am »
So I picked up a pretty straight PE400? I had to drive from Shitney to Melbourne to get it ! Anyway the seller said it was an 82 ! wrong ! it is infact a 9/80 the Vin is PE400-103516 and Eng is PE400-103526 . I think its an X but it could be a T  ??? I have tried to find out but nothing concrete, hopefully the brains trust can help me out.

Looks like a T as it has no bash bars on the front of the frame . T had a bash plate , X had the bars .
Is that a TS ER tank ?
Its only old bike racing FFS get over yourselves

Might be 1980 model if it would of have a alloy bash plate, although its a little hard to tell, can a you post a decent side on photo showing frame rails under engine? The left side pic looks like there could be the extra frame rails instead of bash plate so could be a 81, but it almost looks like the rail could be owner added and not original too because it looks a little 'iffy' where the rail is attached under the footpeg and not like my frame, but it could just be the the photo giving it that impression too. The decals on side covers seem to look like 1980 from my angle. If the 400 is yellow then they are 1980 decals.

Chain guide is 81

If the tank is 7L its TS185, if its 10L its TS250. Tank is most likely 82 due to the decals

If you want to be 100% sure just email Mick Hone Suzuki with the numbers and they will confirm either 80/81. The PE's are normally pretty easy to ID just by a few features alone but with other suzukis, it always pays to check with an AU dealer because the online number sheets are for USA market and do not match what we have here. The online sheets say one of my TS250's is a 78 but when i checked with Australian dealer it turned out to be a 77, i also found a chart with Au numbers too which also confirmed it.

Cheers Lads, I will try and get some better photies, the tank I believe is 82 TS185 Previous owner had it setup for racing VMX,sidecover plastics are original as are the Decals, front guard is DRZ rear is Preston Petty. I have just spent $300 on spares that it needs from Sydney City motorcycles Kogarah, new side covers $66 ea new front guard $119 and some other bits and pieces. I reckon Motoduro UK will get a workout as well.
PS the rear chain guide is only half there,if anyone has any spares laying around hit me up

9/80 is just the manufacture/assembly date. I can clearly see the frame rails now and they look original so definitely 81 model. Side cover decals are 1980 though so someone changed those at some point.

You can also tell its an 81 by the barrel fins/rubbers in the fins. 81-82 were like that. 80 had no slots and just used round rubber discs inbetween the fins.

That chart i have found safe to use for AU models but not those other multiple black and white sheets.

Its Definitely an X model by the frame , frame numbers and the engine number .
Compliance plate says 9/80 , they had their models by the financial year , which also made it an 81 .
