I bought a 2007 311cdi medium wheel base Sprinter earlier this year and am completely happy with it. It has done just over 200000k's and is great to drive, returns 10L per 100k's fuel economy and the best thing is it is rear wheel drive and you can get to most of the engine without taking too much skin off. Also there are quite a few after market parts suppliers who offer quality replacements.
Can't speak highly enough of them. Even the wife doesn't mind driving it!

I had 2 Sprinters when I was doing my bike transport business and they proved to be reliable and remarkably powerful for a 4 cylinder turbo diesel. Both were 308 CDI. I  had them both set up to carry 3 bikes easily (2 forward, 1 backwards) and to tow a 6 bike trailer. Even fully loaded they had no problem sitting on the speed limit with plenty to spare.

The key is to keep clean oil and filters in them for reliability. I changed oil and filters every 10K
Arrogance.....A way of life for the those that having nothing further to learn.
