73-4 montessa forks
« on: August 04, 2008, 08:47:05 pm »
HEy foreigners,  :D

I got two fork legs in a bike ATM and have noticed they appear to be both what i would consider right hand legs ( as in the brake bracket is on the same side on each leg ) any how i say montessa as they have a 'M" at the bottom in a circle, any how a well respect motessa owner told me they come of a motessa 73/74 somthing or other.   Not that im that keen on what they are but on if they are worth any thing to any one ?

i was going to cut these brake tags off them as they do my head in and im using a spooler so i dont need the brace, but then i thought i would ask if they are of any value restoration wise to someone here and if so i wont go wrecking them by cutting up a perfectly good set of forks, just cause i dont like the look of the mounts.

Would be happy to swap or sell them for the cost of replacing them with a similar set like betors or cerrani style ( pre 75 somthings)

Is this making sense ?  are these forks worth keeping original for somone  ? if so how much or what swap, and if not there getting a tidy up, as they work fine i just dont like the stay mounts and they also have sometop nut with a wide rim that fouls my bars so i cant up them higher in the triples at the moment.

this was brought to a head on the weekend as i raced this frame and i needed to lower the front end and these things couldnt do it unless i pulled the bars off and then refitted them ( all too hard at the time)

 ???

"I got two fork legs in a bike ATM and have noticed they appear to be both what i would consider right hand legs ( as in the brake bracket is on the same side on each leg )" I'm no expert and I haven't got them in front of me but because they have similar legs both sides doesn't mean they are not a matching pair. Most of these propertity forks where made to sell to 'all comers' and to fit a wide arrange of bikes/brakes/hubs.

"any how i say montessa as they have a 'M" at the bottom in a circle", Yep, they're Monty

"Not that im that keen on what they are but on if they are worth any thing to any one" ?  Given that Monty was a small player the forks are gonna be relatively valuable to someone doing a OEM resto as they are Monty specific. But a surprising amount of Monty stuff has survived.

(I think a greater proportion of the rarer bands survive compared to the 'mass produced' Jappers because people respected and valued the rarer bands with a sometimes vague idea that they must be valuable).

"if so i wont go wrecking them by cutting up a perfectly good set of forks, just cause i dont like the look of the mounts." Seems a lot of trouble to go to just for appearances regardless. I don't know about you  but I wouldn't just take to them with an angle grinder - it would end up lookiong pretty bogie unless done properly (lathe) IMHO.

"Would be happy to swap or sell them for the cost of replacing them with a similar set like betors or cerrani style ( pre 75 somthings)" I would be happy to have them for my 'second one after the next project'....

'74 Monty forks would be most appropriate 8). But I haven't got any replacements to offer you ::).

OK but would they have a value ? as in if i bought somthing else or yu later found somthing you could trade what would we be talking value wise ? if its next to zero im happy to cut em, but if they are hard for you to find the correct ones, im happy to wait it out till you find somthing, or given a value i can chase something down my end, with a veiw to a budget you have at your end ?

again is that making sence ?

I think you'll find they are valuable in the sense that they are sort after rather than expecting lots of dollars. Good forks go for about $100US on US Ebay pretty regular.

So I would say 'cut away' ;)
