Shipping a bike to NZ

How difficult and expensive is it to ship a bike to NZ?

I assume it would have to be crated and not in a wooden crate. 

Would it be easier to break it down and sent it in few boxes as parts.

You'll need to check the definition of "parts"

For example, in Australia, the definition is no front end. ie no triple clamps, forks and wheel

Ship over as part of a move? Or for an event/ride?
I believe it makes a difference. The tax rules are mind boggling.

I moved over to NZ in 2005 with 2 bikes, back home in 2008 with 3 (inc one of the ones I took over)

Unregestarable race bikes are easier, tax wise.

I also brought back a bike in a house move and wasn't a drama-if its for commercial benefit and not a  move, I would recommend shipping it as "parts" to make it easier.
