Jerry the part number of front axle spacer changed for the 78 model to #2250.
It then remained the same part# width for all following models until the end of the front drum brakes in 84.

Have you found the width yet?

I will be pulling an original down soon, but in the mean time someone else may already have a 78 or following model dismantled?

No Mick I'm still hanging out for info. I am loathe to dismantle my front wheel for rebuilding until I find out. I suspect the offset from the hub to rim is wrong but I want to prove it before pulling it apart and the spacer may be contributing. Just want to line up all the ducks! J PS my spacer is 25mm

Jerry, I am trying to have a shed clean up(to make more room ::) ) and get my 78 Magnum out at the weekend.

The width of the spacer isn't that important to the wheel(hub) positioning between the fork sliders.
It is the width of the backing plate that is clamped between the drum side of the hub and one fork leg that determines the position of the hub between the legs.
The opposite leg is just gets clamped onto the large axle boss OD after tightening the axle. They could have just made that axle boss longer, but then you wouldn't be able to swap the spacer out for a GS speedo drive of the same width if desired.

Saying that though, I will try to get you those exact measurements of mine at the weekend.
