86 Dr 250 wont run
« on: May 25, 2015, 06:50:37 pm »
I just picked up a 86 dr 250 and I cant get it to run. I have good compression and spark, cleaned the main jet, has a pumper carb and it squirts fuel as it should. Cleaned the tank and added fresh fuel and air cleaner is good. Out of desperation I put some aerostart down the plug hole and it ran for about 10 seconds.

Any suggestions.

Could be the float valve sticking not letting fuel into the fuel bowl ?
One of my bikes done this because of it sitting to long ( a month or so not running )

Stators can be a bit iffy on DR's I had one that would run perfect for 5 min and then die, after cooling off it would be fine again. Check the carb but also check the stator too.

Cheers, it has not run long enough to get hot and whenever I check spark it's always there even after it did run for that short time but I will still check the stator out. Besides cleaning the jet and making sure the float valve is ok is there anything else in the carby I should check and do these bikes need a battery to run?

Don't need a battery to run.

Check that the carb vent hoses are not blocked. I have a friend with a DRZ400 and it sat for about 3 months and wouldn't run due to an insect nest in the vent hoses.

If it runs on aerostart then its a fuel issue.
pull it and strip , inspect and clean.
check flow from the tap. silly things like pinched hose and clogged taps have stopped bikes before.

This/\

How fresh is the fuel? Single cylinder 4Ts seem particularly keen to crack the irits over slightly stale fuel.
I know you said you added fresh fuel, but sometimes that's not enough - especially if the carb is still full of the stale old fuel.

the carb will be full of green fungus preventing any atomisation of fuel with air. prepare to do battle when you get the bowl off!
