400 Falta timing
« on: February 04, 2017, 02:22:59 pm »
I've just received a Falta head to go with my Southbay modded Falta cylinder & have come across a couple of different ignition timing figures
Some sources like the Clymer manual say all 380s/400s should be timed 3.4-3.6mm but I've also seen a spec sheet that listed the Faltas as 3.8-4.0mm
Compression on the Falta was listed as being higher than the earlier models
What sort of timing figure are people using in their Faltas?

Something strange I came across today, normal B8HS sits 2 or 3 threads up but a B8ES sticks out by about the same amount. I think the easiest way around this will be to turn up a 2.5mm thick washer to run under the longer reach plug

1/2" reach plug fitted

3/4" reach plug fitted

Tony , make the spacer with a inside thread , so it can not fall off by mistake . Especially if you are in the pits or in a hurry .  I have to do the same on my 998 engines to clear the valves .
VMX shocks , We don't just sell them - I design and produce them individually for you since 1989.

Unfortunately now that I don't work as a toolmaker I don't have access to a 14mm spark plug tap, will just bore it to a good size over the thread

3.5mm spacer lined things up nicely

Picked up another Falta head that has the same machined recess, haven't tried a plug yet to see if the same problem exists
