12 regulator on 6v bike
« on: February 17, 2015, 02:56:33 pm »
Ok so im still having some probs on my dt400 electrically lighting wize.. both on the lighting coil and batt terminal pumps out 40v plus with no load or batt.. worked out that it needs a fully loaded  circuit to soak all the volts..how ever prob is if u loose one globe, u then blow the other due to too much voltage..even at idle I have 14v.. so can I just put a 12v reg on this then run 12 v lights. I have a 12v reg from a dt200 but not sure how to wire it up.. it has white yellow black and red wires.  I tried a coulple of combinations with it but could not get any substantial reading..what voltage shoult I expect to see..I asume 12v.. any help would be great thanks

For AC system get this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tympanium-AC-Voltage-Regulator-/381154222383?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58be8fe12f&vxp=mtr

(available elsewhere too)

for DC get this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Triumph-Norton-BSA-Single-Phase-Rectifier-Regulator-/161167785269?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2586593d35&vxp=mtr

Single phase reg/rect will have 4 wires most times. 2 AC input and then a pos and neg output.

14-14.5 AC is fine. Many aftermarket AC regs will cut off at that point. It slightly overdrives the headlight globes (wont blow though) but is good for night racing as you get a crisp white light. Bulb life is slightly reduced though.

Many DC reg/rec's will be set at 13.7v though

You can buy a Podtronics 12 v regulator from Classic Allparts about $70 , he 's in Sydney also  on Ebay. I bought one for a 6v Bultaco , no problems.

Google Podtronics as there are different output versions.
Bultaco Metralla, Matador MK 5, Montadero mk2, El Bandido model 18,plus lots of bits and two Honda XR's 250,350.
