2015 Classic national titles - Containerizing Bikes
« on: August 26, 2014, 10:53:10 am »
Though unable to confirm it there is a possibility of the event being held in Perth. However wherever it's held, every year we get asked how we go about containerizing our bikes so successfully.  So hear is the .  Here is my cost for this year for the container from perth, container $4686.00, forkie $98.00 (beer) and about $30.00 for ancillaries (eyelets for race bibs) collected $4800 for 24 bikes, cost per bike $200.00 return

It cost $235.00 per bike (26) to Qld last year

To get the containerising right you need to

Use universal size crates so you can comfortably be able to fit 26 bikes and equipment, we had quick shades, generators, cleaners, tool boxes stored in the space above our two storey crates in a 20ft container.

Size of crates 1800mmL x 1100mmH x 500mmW some make their own from metal etc.  We also got one of the guys to bang them together for just the cost of the material cost ($30.00)

Forget clubs, just need a couple of people to start the process with one of them being responsible for accounting for the money.  You need to get a price (we used K&S frieghters) this year, brilliant.  Remember the cost is from the the home city to the track and return.  You need to get this price in January/February  no later  then send an email to vintage clubs asking for expression of interest from people, no matter what club they are from.  As it is a National event not a club event

Use club websites for initial advertising and then follow up advertising if you need more response

April/May  you need to get deposits from those wishing to use the container, do not leave it to the last minute.  You need the commitment.  It will start to give you an idea of interest etc.

Make certain the container is loaded and on it's way in plenty of time.  Always be in contact with the hosting club to arrange delivery (Wednesday/Thursday prior to the event)  You will need to ensure they have a forklift or bobcat with tynes.  We are able to take our own tynes just in case.

Placing and unloading your bike takes no time at all and for the bikes to fit you have to:  remove the front wheel, take the mudguard off and take the handle bars off  a suggestion to stop any movement is to make a bar the interior width of the bike and place onto the triple clamps instead of the handlebars, throw anything you can fit in your crate and away you go.  Took me half an hour to load my crate, others take longer

DO NOT PLACE THE WORDS MX OR DIRT BIKES ON THE MANIFEST THEY ARE CLASSIC BIKES, WILL STOP QUARANTINES INTEREST IF COMING TO WA

This years NATS we stopped for the presentations and was well and truely loaded by dusk.  Container arrives back home on Friday

Please any questions PM myself of Big Thumpa for more info.

Great info Tossa, dirt cheap.

Heres hoping the title is in WA next year as would love to venture over to soak up your hospitality and support a state that makes a massive effort every year for the titles.
Eagerly awaiting a date

Cheers Troy

If it's not in your state, wherever it is this is by far the cheapest way to move your bike/s if you get enough interested

don't forget it is also the cheapest way to transport a bike you have sold or bought in the state you are going to, those spots can also be sold as well.  One guy this year sold a montessa in SA and brought home a Yamaha MX360A all for $200.00
