I've heard the "US Import" argument lots of times, but I'm pretty sure it is incorrect.

The Americans got 17-digit VINs earlier than anyone else, the Japanese got them later that anyone else.
Through the late 80s and the 90s, a lot more "grey import" dirtbikes came from Japan than the USA.
The Americans refer to them as "Japanese numbers" (including the bloke who posted up the info on Thumper Talk) - it is certainly bloody difficult to find an English language frame number decoder for non-VIN Hondas made after the early 1980s.

As best as I can tell, Australian-delivered Hondas mostly had 17-digit VINs, but at least some (possibly later shipments) came with old-style frame numbers.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Ok so it's most likely a Jap import ? As long as it's an 87 .. Looks identical to my old 87 frame ?

I had 2 1989 YZ250s, both seemingly identical. Both had matching VINs but ne had a 17 digit VIN and the other had lesser numbers. I can't remember them now but something like 10 or 12 digits similar to yours Tim37.  The prefix's were the same, just the following digits.  Again both matching numbers so they were original stampings.

I heard various versions of why that was the case but never found out for sure.  Heard the "it's a Jap spec bike" or "it's a US import" but found out for sure.  Sorry that's not a help except to know that there is likely others out there as well.
