Adjusting Twin Leading Shoe Brakes?
« on: October 24, 2014, 04:35:45 pm »
Whats the best way to adjust twin leading shoe front brakes on YZ250J.   I have stripped and cleaned the hub and shoes, but they seem worse!

Draw XXXXXXXs on the shoes in texta assemble spin the wheel applying the brakes disassemble sanding block the high spots and adjusting the connecting rod between the adjusters 4 or 5 repeats will get it just right, I used EBC Water grooved shoes but I think they are NLA

The basic adjustment bit is easy:
Loosen off the "second" shoe (the one that isn't directly attached to the cable);
Tighten the "main" shoe up until it is just rubbing;
Then tighten the second shoe until it is also just rubbing;
Back them both off and set the cable tension.

There are other tricks like tightening the axle with the brakes held on hard, and filing the shoes to match the drum, but that's the basics.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Thanks Nathan, by loosing the 2nd shoe, I take it I have to wind in the connecting rod so the 2nd shoe moves away from the hub?

loosen the connecting rod and then adjust it so that with no cable connected, the cams are both flat against the brake shoe plates. Do up the connecting rod.

Get some double sided tape and stick some emery paper around the drum liner then put the wheel back together and rotate with brake pressure to "cut" the shoes to the drum shape... simple. pull it to bits, clean it up and they should be ok. test ride and look for high spots just in case.
