Ok so I have to 480 engines split on the bench ATM, 82 and 83.
The general feeling is that most guys like the 4spd but the 83 chassis was far superior.
lets break it down to just the engines is the 82 box reliable? there seems to be more 82's on the track
(easier to get a hold of ??).
looking at both side by side and it appears that the 82 box looks like just a revised 250 box, less a gear.
The selector forks look similar too. do they handle the power of the 480 top end.
this 4spd box is immaculate.
The 83 box is beefed up with wider gear faces and the overall width is about 3mm wider. Oh and main shaft is a few mm larger too.
My 5spd box needs work (3rd and 5th gears + selector fork)
So I was told that the gear boxes are not interchangeable, Id be stuffed to see where the difference is.
I can see the 83 cases beefed up around the crank, but they run the same bearings through out both engines.
How'd they squeeze in the 83 box?
why are the 5spd's so hard to get and expensive?
What up grades do Honda do from the terrible 81 450 to the 82 480?

I had a 82 for a short time , but behind the clutch basket where the bearings is , mine cracked the casing from the bearing to another spot I think a other bearing.
I did see on the forum just after I sold it that someone else had cracked there 480 in the same spot theres not much meat between these spots.
I am not sure if the 83 has a different set up and don't have these probs.

thanks had a look can see why
top case is 82 bottom is 83 white marker indicates where honda reinforeced the case and moved the oil height hole.
this clutch might be a reason why the 82 cracked aswell as there is not cush drive
might move this to tech talk
