How much luck can I have?
« on: August 19, 2007, 09:15:26 pm »
I started my XR200 powered KTM today for the first time.
The carb was identified, on the old site, as being from an RD350. It started on the third kick and not only did it run it idled and and pulled through to the upper rev range then got a bit flat. We could not believe how well it ran, the plug even came out a dark tan colour.
I'll have a play to sort out the top end when I get a chance. What a change from chasing jetting on my XT500.

Not vintage I know but I had to tell someone...................... ;D

I tried to get a piccie tonight but no joy. Probably have to wait till the weekend.

It's rough at present and will be stripped to finish and paint. Still needs a better muffler though. It's a buzz to ride, it's the sort of bike you could ride all day and still have energy left. I'm looking forward to getting some regular riding in.

I seem to remember Gorby that you had an XR200 in a PE175D or Z frame on the previous forum. There's a PE175Z rolling frame at the local dump shop if your interested in another.

Cheers

OzKTM,
The bike is (was) a 1990 GS250. I paid $50 for it with half a stuffed motor. I also had two spare XR200 motors from when I built my wifes bike up. One thing led to another and this thing was born.
I fitted the lower frame rails from a Suzuki TS185ER ($20 from the dumpshop) to get a bit more room and it's got the XR tank, side panels and a half XR half KTM seat.
It needs a bit of finishing but it's a buzz to ride. Goes suprisingly well, handles well, turns well but the suspension needs tuning.
I've tried to post a piccie but I don't know how it will turn out, might have to email it to someone to get them to post it.

Cool hybrid Brent, but you know me, I think the tank needs ta be a yammie, since you have a bit of suzie, ktm & honda, but dont ask me how to get the seat looking good with a yammie tank ;D. Good job piecing it altogether. Great to see unused parts going on a bike and getting ridden. I bet a few people come up and look and have to ask how ya did it.
If at first you dont succeed, give up and drink beer

Thanks for that DJ, I think it's a throw back to living in NZ in the early 70's where this was pretty much how you got a bike. If you could find one to buy it was usually way too expensive.
