I was just reading about the hassle of shipping a motorcycle as a motorcycle from the US to Australia
Is it possible to ship it in pieces or is that just a ridiculous thought as the high cost of shipping ?

I was thinking that it could possibly be worth it because you would see your bike 6 months sooner and wouldn't have additional add on fees.  Just a thought

I had a motorcycle posted from NZ (thank you Bill) in pieces, I checked with the relevant Govt Dept in Canberra and found a bike can be imported as "parts" as long as there is no front end ie forks, wheel, triples.
My bike was sent with no forks or wheels as I could source those locally. The shipment was genuinely considered "parts"

If you want an entire bike you need an import permit plus what ever other paper work is required.

I did receive a letter from Canberra stating that the four packages and their contents had been "noted" and that they did meet the description of Motorcycle Parts but if more parts arrived further action could be taken

Yes, I did as well.
Just got him to send the bits that I would use in a resto and left the rest behind.
He still sent the original books and Title, Bonus.
Example: I didn't want the old tyres, rusty rims or spokes, so I asked him to put the bolt cutters over the spokes and just pack the hubs etc, etc,
I think everything else arrived in two weeks in a few separate packages via USPS priority.
Cost was just over seven hundred, including the frame, engine, etc, which was a bargin, considering it was from the El Paso just below Chicago.
Probably the worse US postage senario.
