longest standing riding "partner"....
« on: February 12, 2014, 03:18:14 pm »

In another thread i got to thinking, I was out riding with my mate on the weekend, him on XJR1300 Yam and me on Tiger 800, he and i have been riding together for 40 YEARS THIS YEAR!  Bloody long time, first he on Mini Trail, me on HOnda scrambler Horse (!), then Yza me and Xr him, mini races together, Enduros together (both on 390 Husk), Mx together on Huskies, then me on RM/KX him still on Huskies (the only time i genuinely beat him!!!) now on Ktm450 & 530 and roadies etc, still riding at least once a month together!

How long have you lot been riding with your "partner"?  Lets see who has the oldest....

I started riding with my mate Muz in the forth form at school so that makes it about 1974.
We've gone our own way at different times but now both live in Darwin, me 25 years him 15+. Still ride the same old bikes we had then and still ride together.

And the old bugger is still as much faster than me as he was back then.

One of the best friends I could ask for
The older I get, the faster I was

Best mate of over 40yrs.  He never rode or anything like that came to a couple of MX's in the day I left and joined the army came back 20yrs later and it was like I had never been away.  He came down and watched a classic MX one day now rides and loves it, we have so much fun just taking the piss out of our complete and utter lack of skills, wouldn't have it any other way

Haven't got a riding partner with quite that amount of heritage, but have had two riding partners of note.  One from growing up riding old trailies in the kuring-gai national chase north of sydney, and the other, the venerable graeme mcelligott, creator of this fine forum, who took me under his wing when first getting into vmx a decade ago, and we've been riding mates ever since.

A more generous, amiable guy you'll never meet, who's always happy if he can get to a few race meets every year (dirt track of last couple of years) and have some company there, back and in the pits - and that's where I came in handy.  We've driven all over nsw and as far as qld (for classic dirts) for meets over that time, and we always have a fine time, and always come away with the same race results - solid mid-pack placings.  Rarely more, sometimes less.  Don't matter.

Funny thing is, we both bought DT250D's new in 1977.  Curious choices, seeing we coulda gone 400 - and shoulda gone IT or PE or European.  We're both too mild-mannered for that sort of guff!

Its been terrific, and still is.

That's amazing G!  especially the xt ride, my mate had one also....1976 model or 77, I of course had no money so had xl350 with a 420 bore, bill bell cam, ported head, big carb and lots of broken pistons, valves etc, had to get a third job at that time to support my habit!  Eventually he broke the Xt in half at Dargle, although I reckon the damage was done at Hungry Creek!  Great memories!!!

My old mate Bernie and I met at school when we were 7 and 8 and I'm now 64 and he's 65. We started drag racing together in 1968, played rugby together both as juniors and golden oldies and started riding dirt bikes together in 1968. We started racing together in 1969 and today, even though neither of us race any more, we still have our vintage bikes and ride regularly on the farm and trail riding and yearly on our vintage tackle at HBBB and CD. That adds up to us being riding mates for 46 years and it ain't over yet.
