Yammie parts - availability question.
« on: July 23, 2008, 09:08:58 pm »
How readily available are old Yamaha parts, preferably in Australia?
I'm about to start chasing IT 250 and YZ 80 bits from the late 70s.
I'm sure everything is eventually available on eBay but how about the Yamaha Dealers?

Don't know about the YZ80, but have some experience with the ITs:
Most stuff is OK, particularly if you're not after a nut-and-bolt resto. You definitely ought to be able to keep the bike running without butchering it.

IT plastics are probably the biggest hassle, but VMXPlastics are now doing D/E/F guards in IT blue, so that's a help. (The rear guard is actually the shorter YZ style, but it still looks pretty good - I've got a blue YZ125 guard on my IT175F and it looks right, FWIW).

Mechanicals are mostly common to lots of Yamahas, so no drama there.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

yamaha dealers will be extinct before owners of the yamaha MX bikes and parts,  simply by numbers and globalisation.  There is loads of YZ 80 parts on internet ,  and generally the IT Range (I have have had a mint 465,  so I know what I am talking about) is lesser sort after that the MA classed VMX bikes.  There is 2-5 bikes every week on ebay australia,  some of them mint.
In saying that,  VINDURO  is picking up steam very fast in AUS/NZ as a vintage MX offshoot.
PM me if you like to have a chat or get any directions.

Gwillam at moorooka yamaha is your man. he can beat a lot of ebay prices with next day delivery on a lot of stuff and he see's these old bikes as a welcome change to the mundane.
ebay can be handy too.

Wombat,
Also ask your dealer to check the "dead stock list" if the part is listed as no longer avaliable.
Most yamaha dealers can access the list, it's compiled of parts ordered over the years and never collected and are gathering dust on shelves all over the country.
Worth a try.

Also try Speed and sport in the US, they have had a number of things that i couln't get through yamaha Australia. When you type in part numbers, you have to include the dash between numbers.. I couldn't work it out for a bit. :-[   ::)
They are good to deal with..
Maico's, the only way to go.
