Old dogs new tricks
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:07:41 pm »
Occasionally I get to ride on a "modern" track (Mt kembla, Appin Louee ) and most of the young guns seem to whip over most of the larger jumps and make it look easy. I'm still not too afraid to hit jumps at speed but for the life of me can't get anywhere near what might be even the slightest whip to happen, instead I seem to default to the classic cross up style. I've watched other riders, videos and read about how to whip, but just can't get it. Tried it on modern bikes and old bikes. At 53 I'm probably to old to be reprogrammed and will just have to be content with being a gumby.

back in the RH250 days 'our' Ivan Miller was doing cross ups all the way through 'any' race that had big jumps in it. We thought it was all for show but in hind sight was probably to scrub off speed & get back on the ground quicker. Anyway--one lucky day when i was on form for a lap & kept him in sight [me on an MX250] i tried to copy him while i could still see him & got flicked off so fkn hard that i never tried it again [not like that anyway].
Was watching [caught the end of] a [TVNZ] kids program yesterday following 'Levi Sherwood' with his world class [what's it called] FMX free style loop the loop--can't watch it these days as makes me feel chicken--the things they do. Has land locally being from here & let's the vmx boys & vintage quads run meets occasionally. Certainly done well since attending 'kindy' [preschool] with my youngest. & good on him too for sticking at it. Really really admire him--& all those guys that stick there neck out doing that stuff with no margin for error. Gosh. Sorry, off subject, again.

My son calls it a bum whip....

The bike goes straight but my bum hangs out to the side!

The stuff these younguns are doing these days is amazing. I used to dream of attempting a backflip on my Speedwell dragster way back then but never actually attempted it. Same with the loop the loop after watching "Earthquake" at the cinema. Though I did attempt that on my Baine Superflex Skateboard in a huge concrete sewer pipe which only resulted in a lot of pain.
I'm more than content to make the distance on jumps these days without being too fancy. I can do a little bit of a scrub but I'd hardly call it a whip.  The back wheel trying to overtake the front wheel on the ground is more than enough for more me.
Arrogance.....A way of life for the those that having nothing further to learn.
