On the crown it promotes detonation, on the skirts it wears off eventualy

yes on the skirt how long is wear off eventualy?  how many engine hours (with no dusting  :o)

Are you saying it holds heat Lozza or something else as I've heard good reports from speedway (car) racers.??

just got off the phone to Shaun from Ceramic Coat Australia he said the shelf life of ceramic on the skirt of a deisel truck after 1 million kms still good, supply to compatition Auto for drag raceing after 12months no come backs, only likes to put on a coating of 3 thou after that inaccuratcies  will come into play.
Coating the piston top will not cause detination it actually helps to prevent it,
Also can coat engine cases with a thermal dispercant wich will cause cooling of oil upto 50 deg  ;)

Shaun is pissing in your pocket. Might be alright is a speedway four stroke using a 100 litres a minute of methanol that doesn't detonate at all. But with petrol and any 2T engine tuned to over 85% of it's potential it will promote detonation.
What it does is stop the heat path to the ring and cylinder wall. Without bare aluminium to absorb the combustion heat it is retained in the surface layer of the coating, then instantly heating the intake charge and stopping heat transfer to the cylinder wall via the ring.Fuel cools the piston how is fuel going to cool the piston with a barrier between them. With the piston coatings , Wossner coat all their pistons and RGv's have them standard depending on your oil and air filter maintenance is what determines how long the coating lasts. Never found any improvement on the dyno or lap times using coated pistons and have yet to see any measuered abatement in bore wear.  Failng that I'll post a few pics of inside a factory Aprilia RSA engine with no forking coatings anywhere, ditto F1 engines.
One thing it is good at separating is you from some of your hard earned.

Thanks Lozza, that explains a lot.
What about combustion area on a 2 stroke??

Thankz Lozza, this is what we are about seperating the salesmen from the facts, so in short for my rare bird should we try 3 thuo on the skirt until my luck changes and over size piston set located.
hey anyone know where we can locate T305 or T350 suzuki barrels or 62.5mm pistons set ;)

seen a single 2st with ceramic coating on top and teflon on skirt it was a hand grenade. one other thing it had ceramic coating in the exhaust port thinking that it would stop heat transfer into the barrell and speed up exhaust pulse. (lozza your thoughts)
shelpi instead off coating the pistons could you coat the cylinder walls.

that would be my plan of attack as well. Coating the cylinder with Nicasil or the like might get you out of trouble.... depends on how bad the piston wear is. Rings can be easily obtained for just about any piston.

yes you can coat 2bangers with CBC2 coating upto 3 thou and can coat pistons and use them together in the coated jug

according to Steve from www.techlinecoating.com/highperformance all car manufacturers in the world have been coating all their pistons for the last 4 to 5 years
I will be doing a test bed on a old flogged out motor (2smoker)and recoat worn piston and worn barrel and flog it with no mercy and see what happens  :o shit if it works thats gunna stop a few rebores and reduce the overheads consideribly as the cylinder and piston coating is a fraction of parts and machining cost 8)

nicasil is expensive so you might aswell resleeve, theres yamaha's out there that cant get pistons and are having to get resleeve's to match their old pistons, so see the implication if this coating  is as good as they are trying to say ;) :) :D ;D 8) my worn pistons and bores are born again cost effective :o

Your spoiled for choice these days, ring Grant at NZ Cylinders thay can put a lot of plating on a iron liner. They can also plate 6000 series aluminium so you can replace the iron liner with a plated ali one and weld it in. Maybe not as cheap as trying to grow a piston but much better in the long run. Stanard size pistons are cheap as.

yep Lozza we are spoilt but for me oversize pistons are what dreams are made of so yer resleave is the go, just got of the phone from the bike factory and Richard says they have been useing the coating on piston skirts for years and not a single problem so ive sent 2x pistons in, we let you know how we go ;)
