Evaluating The VR Project
« on: August 23, 2013, 03:14:14 am »
I decided to keep the VR project, so I thought it was time to gather up all the parts.

I could not find the front wheel and how lucky am I that there was one for sale on eBay yesterday (Got it for $9.99US Wow!).  The motor is being checked out at a friends shop.  She will need the typical NEW resto stuff:

Tires/Tubes
Sprockets and Chain
Mikuni Carb
Handlebars
Cables, Levers, Throttle and Grips
Shocks and Fork Springs
Petcocks
Fenders
Seat Cover and Foam
Pipe

I'm missing a few small bolts here and there and a Motoplat coil.   Oh ya money and time also.  ;D

I have the stock footpegs, but what are my options for actually keeping my feet on the bike?  ;D

Footpegs are easy Red, go down to your local Yamaha shop and buy the pegs, brackets, pins and springs off a late model YZee 125 with an alloy frame, cut the std mounts off your frame, line up the new set up (get the gap between the gearlever/brake pedal correct), then weld the suckers on. You will probably be able to move the pegs back as most old bikes had a to close pedal/lever relationship and you will be better off...have a look where they are on a modern bike...inline with the swingarm pivot. This goes for most modern bikes...price up Honda, kawie etc and KTM do a kit.... and the KTM Free rides have a bolt on set up. Check your pm's.

Good stuff , i have one sitting there as well. Welding late model pegs on it seems a bit criminal!!

I think I will try to find something that can be adapted first, before I start cutting and welding.  ;)

Kawasaki pegs from the 80's and 90's are almost a direct bolt on, only having to be narrowed to fit the Montesa's peg split mount. You can even use the
original return springs! No messing with the frame..

Thanks!  I got some used OEM KDX pegs to try out before I spend money on fancy ones.

I traded a seat cover, foam and swingarm I had for another bike to get a seat cover, foam and a pipe for the VR.

What are the best length shocks to use for racing?

Had all my frames out getting ready to put them on eBay, so I thought I would weigh them.  I love the way the VR/ V75's look, but what did Montesa have against chromoly?
 ;D

V75 29.8 lbs
Elsinore 21 lbs
Phantom 21 lbs
Jackpiner 24 lbs

We have used from 13.5 to 14.25 " shock length with good results. Some later models did have the main cradle frame in chromoly.
They used to smuggle in chromoly tubes to be used on the works bikes. Such was Franco's Spain.
