Packing an engine for shipping
« on: August 27, 2013, 02:25:52 pm »
Just wondering what is a good way to package an engine and other bits for shipping.

Have heard of a few different ways:
- make a mini pallet and rachet strap engine to it and put it in a heavy duty cardboard box
- wrap the engine in glad wrap and put in heavy duty box (or plastic tub?) and fill with expanding foam
or variations on the above (packed in foam peanuts/rags etc)

How has anybody done it before, also have to remember that have to ask seller to do it as well!!

Lots of bubble wrap, then in a cardboard box.
Make sure it can't move within the box, and tape the box well.
Sorted.

Simply wrapping it in cardboard after the bubble wrap works too.

Most 2T motors are light enough to go through the Auspost. Heavier stuff like DT400 motors might need the top end removed and posted as a seperate package - still cheaper and easier than a freight company...
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Heavy duty plastic tub, lined with scrunched up newspaper and a plywood (8-10mm )lid cable tied on at 50 mm centres, use heavy ties. Alloy v8 speedway motors are shipped around in purpose built plastic tubs and lid. I have felt a 410 ci motor raced in at Kwinana WA on a Friday night, pulled out, packed and flown in a tub to Melbourne, arrive Saturday morning, and then to Warnambool Saturday arvo,it was still retaining the heat from the night before.!!!
Bultaco Metralla, Matador MK 5, Montadero mk2, El Bandido model 18,plus lots of bits and two Honda XR's 250,350.
