Works shocks oil
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:41:04 am »
I'm about to re-seal and re-oil three different sets of Works shocks...early finned alloy, steel body and alloy body current design. I've previously used 5wt Belray shock oil but suspect that it may be a bit light. My bud in America recommended ATF but I don't think he's correct. What oil do you Works shock gurus recommend?

I'm also desperately in need of a pair of spring retainers if anyone's got spares they're prepared to sell me.

Firko works has their own fluid. That said ATF is typically about 12.5 wt. I put 20 wt in mine last time and like it well for my big boy size. Never used ATF in works myself.

ATF is the universal "use it in a pinch" bike fluid, although I've never heard of anyone using it for pre-mix.  ;D

Best to use fluids specifically designed a particular use.  Growing up over an hour from any bike shop as a kid I used ATF for a lot of things, because Super Hunky did.  Now I buy shock oil, fork oil, trans oil, 2 stroke engine oil, filter oil and chain lube where ATF and 30wt motor oil kept me riding as a kid.

I use motorex racing sd-1 5 weight in all mine. Oil in shocks is always light weight, thick oil foams and fades too fast.

Thanks fellas, I've still got a couple of bottles of 2.5 and 5 Belray so I'll go with it as soon as the rebuild kits arrive.

I just redid a set of Works using ATF. Bench feel is not really different than the Works shock oil. Curnutt used ATF as it does not change viscosity due to heat. I am really contemplating starting to rebuild Works for people. The seals are readily available at bearing vendors.
