Canned Ham on Marks Swapmeet.
« on: May 20, 2013, 11:06:02 am »
My list has this as a 1975 TNT 175 NOT the '74 model that he reckons it is. I can't find the engine # on either Can-AM or Rotax lists. It doesn't seem much different but it's the difference of being legal for pre 75 and not. We had the "Big Can-Am bust" at the Barrabool Nats back in 1996 where every Can-Am inspected (5 or 6) was declared illegal for pre 75 including the head scrutineers own bike. The only legal '74 numbered Can-Am I've ever seen racing here in Oz was Ted Rootes MX1 that he used for dirt track in the early vintage days. I only bring this up as there was quite a kerfuffle about Can-Am eligibility back in the day and one would assume that the eligibility requirements for Can-Ams in pre 75 would still stand. Having got all of that out of the way, these are brilliant little bikes, I had a TNT 175 I got at the Blacktown swapmeet for $80 which was perfectly fine except for a rooted ignition. I fixed it and the little bugger it went really well, sadly it being a '76 model prevented me racing it back then. This seems a good buy for the money however.....http://www.vintagemx.us/cgi-bin/largephoto.cgi?C=f4RuxcyRDMMxkGaF&w=2

can am 175 tnt. Im not sure of its engine size because the serial numbers do not match. The engine is # 65188 and I can not find it on line. The frame # 5851001841 indicates a 1974 tnt 175. The carb isnt the right one but the engine runs strong and shifts through all the gears. The pipe is perfect w/no dents the kick starter lever is broken and the shifter splines are a little messed up. The bike can be push started and a pair of vice grips for the shifter worked for the test Both wheels are round no cracks.the frame has a 2 in section cut out of it by the carb. The tank is in good shape no leaks $550.00 obo I can ship any where in the continental states for 250.00 or less in 2 to 3 boxes

Mark, the 75 TnT has been deemed eligible for pre-75 as long as the rear wheel travel doesn't exceed 4". The Barabool bikes had obvious non period mods such as swingarms from later Qualies and MX'ers as I recall.

A question on the same subject. I'm using the forks and front wheel out of a TNT in my Hindall Yamaha and need to know if the front brake is any good? It looks like it might be worth persevering with. Mine has a 1974 casting number in it just in case some rule boffin thinks I may be doing something awful :D

There was a bit more to it than just the swingarms. Drakie called me in for an outside opinion and I remember his problem being the post 74 frame numbers and his belief that the post 74 250 engine was different. There was one really out there bike from South Australia that wouldn't have passed anywhere in the world but I thought all of the other bikes including Drakies own 1976 numbered bike were within the flow on spirit as long as the swingarm shock placement was in the 1974 position. I also added that my knowledge on Can Am engine differences was poor so I couldn't really offer up an opinion other than on appearance. Drakie knocked all of the bikes back anyway.

The brakes aren't startling (adequate is a fair description) but radiusing the shoes and a good cable go a long way to improving their performance.
